Let's bring our away form home!
Audere est Facere
Last week, when we beat Everton 3-0 at the new Hill Dickinson Stadium, Spurs became the only Premier League side to have won at every active ground in the competition. This week, we host Chelsea, who we have beaten only 8 times in 66 Premier League meetings. It's a sad record, and Chelsea have been our most formidable opponents over the last 33 years.
As this is a November meeting, it is appropriate to remember the historic first Premier League win over "The Blues" on Guy Fawkes Day 2006. Michael Dawson and Aaron Lennon were our scoring heroes. Ledley King provided a moment of defensive mastery when chasing and catching Arjen Robben before depriving him of the ball in a goal-scoring situation.
We've managed just one win in our last 12 meetings with Chelsea in all competitions. That was two and a half years ago when Ollie Skipp scored a cracking goal (his only senior goal for Spurs). Harry Kane scored a second goal in the 82nd minute and became the first Spurs player to score at home and away against Chelsea since Gary Lineker in 1990/91.
Graham Potter was the beleaguered Chelsea manager struggling to cope with the numerous players at his disposal, and he was sacked in April 2023 despite winning three and losing just one of his remaining five games in charge.
Now Chelsea have Enzo Maresca in his second season in charge. Chelsea remain ultra-active in the transfer market, and many lines would needed to itemise last summer's activity.
Perhaps Chelsea's most significant acquisition this year was 18-year-old Brazilian sensation Estevao, signed from Palmeiras on a long contract (of course!). Estevao scored against his new club in the Club World Cup quarter-final in July.
Chelsea went on to beat another Brazilian team in the semi-final (Fluminense) thanks to two goals by Joao Pedro, who was signed from Brighton in time to play in the World Club Cup. Chelsea completed a tournament victory with a 3-0 win over Champions League holders PSG. Joao Pedro scored the third goal, adding to star of last season Cole Palmer, who scored two. Palmer hasn't been firing on all cylinders this season, but suffered a groin injury against Man Utd in September, and is not likely to play before the latter part of November.
Chelsea will now wear a gold badge on their shirt until the end of the 2028/2029 season, after which the next Club World Cup tournament will be played.
Cole Palmer was named the player of the tournament and Robert Sanchez won the top goalkeeper award.
Chelsea were presented with an award at the August Champions League draw recognising their achievement of making European history, having previously won the Champions League, Europa League, Conference League and Youth League, not forgetting the Club World Cup!
In summer Chelsea made 12 signings and spent £292 million. They did recoup some £250 million with their outgoings, plus the loan of Nicholas Jackson (to Bayern Munich) with a £70 million purchase obligation.
By winning the Europa Conference League Final 4-1 against Real Betis last May, Chelsea completed a grand slam of winning all four European Trophies. The third tier Europa Conference League has been in existence for four seasons now (the fifth is this season) and London clubs have won it twice, after West Ham's 2023 final win.
Chelsea's European trophy wins consist of two Champions League wins (2012, 2021), two Europa League wins (2013, 2019), two European Cup-Winners' Cups (1971, 1998), and two super cup wins (1998, 2021).
Enzo Fernandez is the third Chelsea midfielder to score home and away against Tottenham in a Premier League season after Roberto Di Matteo (1996-97) and Gus Poyet (1998-99). We lost both games last season.
Last week Micky van de Ven became the first recognised defender to score two or more goals in a game in the Premier League for Spurs since Jan Vertonghen at Liverpool on 10 March 2013.
Liam Delap signed from relegated Ipswich in the summer. He suffered a hamstring injury in August but played in Chelsea's 4-3 League Cup win against Wolves on Wednesday. Delap was sent off (two yellow cards) and will have to sit out this game.
Chelsea's league form has been sporadic of late. They lost at Old Trafford and at home to Brighton and last week to Sunderland. Incredibly, Sunderland have beaten Chelsea four times at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League. We've managed just one such win. Chelsea beat Liverpool with an added time goal by Estevao (his first for the club) and overwhelmed Ange Postecoglou's Nottingham Forest 3-0 in what became his last game in a brief period in charge.
Chelsea have slipped down to ninth, but are just three points behind Spurs. I am sure they will adopt an attacking strategy, which will hopefully enable us to bring our away form home!
I don't see any point in waiting for team news, bearing in mind we were not told about Archie Gray, who missed the League Cup defeat at Newcastle and is expected to be out for several weeks. Vicario, Van de Ven, Kudus and perhaps Odobert will return to the starting line-up. The best we can do is hope for a rare win against our nemesis. The game kicks off at 5.30pm tomorrow and is live on SKY here in the UK.
Referee Jarred Gillett refereed our one previous London derby match this season when we beat West Ham 3-0 at The London Stadium. Micky van de Ven scored the second of his five goals for us this season. Pape Sarr and Lucas Bergvall also scored in that game. I'd be ecstatic if we scored three tomorrow! This will be Mr. Gillett's 13th Spurs game in the middle. Let's hope that's lucky for us!
