Confirmed: Calvin Ramsay can make surprise Liverpool return in Premier League

Arne Slot can consider Calvin Ramsay as an option for Liverpool in the Premier League, with the right-back having impressed on his return to the first team in midweek.

Ramsay made his first senior appearance for Liverpool in almost three years on Wednesday night as part of a much-changed side to face Crystal Palace in the Carabao Cup.

While the Reds lost that tie 3-0, the 22-year-old was among the standouts as he lasted the full 90 minutes and found himself heavily involved with the third-most touches of any player (82).

It comes after a series of injuries, four failed loan moves and a role as part of Liverpool’s U21s in the early months of the season.

But with Jeremie Frimpong sidelined with a hamstring injury until early December, Ramsay’s strong display in midweek has led to speculation over a continued role in Slot’s first-team squad.

Ramsay’s chances are boosted as he is eligible for the Premier League after being named in Liverpool’s 24-man senior squad for the competition in September.

The Scotland international took one of 17 non-homegrown slots after failing to qualify for homegrown status, having spent the second half of last season on loan at Kilmarnock.

It means Slot could include Ramsay in his squad for the visit of Aston Villa on Saturday night, though it remains to be seen whether he is in contention.

In his press conference after the defeat to Palace at Anfield, the head coach was asked for his verdict on the right-back’s performance.

“I think Calvin had a very, very decent performance. Calm on the ball,” he told reporters.

“I don’t know if I said it over here but [in] the first half-hour, I think we had better chances than them actually and he was part of that.

“He played with composure. A decent-to-good game for him.

“And I said also afterwards [to Calvin and Kieran Morrison]: ‘If you make your debut after a 3-0 loss, you might feel very, very disappointed – but the two of you can be quite happy with the way you’ve played in your first time here at Anfield’.”

While Slot could be forgiven for believing Ramsay had made a belated debut in that game, he had two previous appearances under Jurgen Klopp in 2022.

His actual debut came against Napoli in the Champions League, before playing 90 minutes in his home bow against Derby in the Carabao Cup.
