Aston Villa's Matty Cash admits he loves to watch 'unbelievable' Chelsea player

Aston Villa right-back Matty Cash has named the Chelsea player he admires and studies.

Of course, Chelsea have some of the Premier League’s best players in their position, which is why they should be fighting around the top end of the table.

Enzo Maresca’s side clinched fourth spot on the final day of the Premier League last season. Even though it’s been a bit of a slower start to this campaign, fans will be hopeful that they soon hit their stride and build some momentum.

Matty Cash studies Chelsea captain Reece James

Aston Villa’s Matty Cash, 28, has admitted that he watches fellow right-back Reece James at Chelsea for inspiration.

Cash told TNT Sports: “I love watching full-backs and study their game a lot in different scenarios – it could be one-v-one defending or how they engage wingers – and I try and add that to my game.

“I love watching Reece James because I think he is a fantastic footballer, and he’s an unbelievable defender as well. I also like watching Trent [Alexander-Arnold] but I think Kyle Walker has been one of the best full-backs that the Premier League has ever seen.”

James has proven he’s one of the elite right-backs around, so it’s no surprise to hear Cash’s comments.

James, who’s growing into a leader at Chelsea, can do a bit of everything. The 25-year-old England international is exceptional defensively with his physicality and intelligence, plus he’s a major attacking threat when he pushes forward with his technique.

Rival fans need to stop lazy Reece James narrative

Yes, James has had frequent injuries throughout his career. His availability is the obvious weakness in his game that rival supporters mention when critiquing the Chelsea full-back.

While it makes sense to be wary of the defender’s fitness issues, it is about time he earns some respect for a faultless 2025 to date.

James has worked very hard on his fitness away from the pitch, and the results are there for everyone to see.

Without a doubt, he’s in the very elite bracket when it comes to right-backs when he’s playing on a consistent basis, which is exactly what he’s done this calendar year. He’s played nine out of nine so far in this season’s Premier League, so long may it continue.
