Nick Pope brands criticism around Newcastle United's £69m summer transfer as 'madness'

**Newcastle United acted decisively in the final throes of the summer transfer window to finally get a new striker through the door.**

Eddie Howe and his recruitment team and been thwarted several times over the summer in their hunt for someone who could match the goals scored by Alexander Isak as his inevitable departure grew closer.

As time ran out and options dwindled, Newcastle finally stopped penny-pinching and offered VfB Stuttgart what they were asking for to sign Nick Woltemade, much to the disgust of Bayern Munich, who had been negotiating all summer to try and bring the price down.

That led to bitter Bayern representatives questioning Newcastle's decision, with Karl-Heinz Rummenigge calling Newcastle 'idiots' and Uli Hoeness saying the Magpies had overpaid for the German striker, forking out £69 million (£65 million + £4 million in addons).

With six goals already this season and fans, pundits and other players cooing over what the 6'6" striker is able to do on the pitch, it's safe to say that those Bayern chiefs are probably feeling a bit silly now.

Woltemade has even got off the mark for the senior German national side since his move to Newcastle. Everything is coming up Big Nick right now, and we're all here for it.

And as we said earlier, it's still [all yet to properly click](https://nufcfeed.com/eddie-howe-praises-first-class-newcastle-united-star-but-wont-label-him-a-success-just-yet-1660305) for the team in terms of getting the best out of him. He's going to be one scary talent.
