Knicks cut ties with son of former All-Star via G League trade

The New York Knicks’ G League affiliate, the Westchester Knicks, has been busy to start the 2025-26 campaign.

The minor league squad recently made headlines by trading the son of a former All-Star to the Grand Rapids Gold (the Denver Nuggets’ G League affiliate).

“The Westchester Knicks, the official NBA G League affiliate of the New York Knicks, made several acquisitions with a combination of trades and selections during today’s 2025 NBA G League Draft,” the team announced last Saturday.

“The team has acquired Adama Bal, the 4th pick in the first round of the 2025 NBA G League Draft, from the Grand Rapids Gold, in exchange for the 8th pick, Jamal Mashburn Jr., and a future first-round pick in the NBA G League Draft.”

Mashburn, whose father played 12 seasons in the NBA and earned an All-Star nod in 2003, enjoyed a productive five-year college career at three different schools (Minnesota, New Mexico, and Temple) before entering the pros.

Mashburn averaged 16.2 points per game for his career as a score-first guard, shooting 40.7% from the field and 35.2% from beyond the arc.

Although Westchester selected Mashburn early in the 2025 G League Draft, the Miami, Florida native will begin his professional career with the Nuggets G League affiliate and attempt to play his way into a two-way or standard NBA contract in due time.
