Unai Emery has confirmed that Emi Buendia will miss Aston Villa’s trip to Liverpool but could return to action as soon as next week.

The 28-year-old suffered a foot injury in the first half of Villa’s 1-0 win over Manchester City last weekend. In the 19th minute, Buendia assisted Matty Cash’s goal - the only goal of the match - before being taken off injured shortly afterwards.

After calling for assistance from the medical team, Buendia hobbled off the pitch and down the tunnel, with Jadon Sancho coming on as his replacement.

Harvey Elliott, who was not in the squad for the Manchester City game, will also miss the match against Liverpool, as he is unable to play against his parent club.

Andres Garcia and Youri Tielemans remain sidelined for this weekend’s visit to Anfield, though Tielemans is expected to return to full training next week.

Asked about Buendia, Emery said: “He is not available for tomorrow, but the injury is going well. I think with a few days more, he can be fit and available for the next match, hopefully.”

“The same players are out,” Emery added. “Youri Tielemans will hopefully train next week, and Andres is getting better, but still some weeks to come back.”

Villa are targeting their fifth consecutive Premier League win this weekend against a Liverpool side that have lost six of their last seven matches in all competitions.

However, Villa have won just one of their last 15 Premier League meetings with Liverpool - the shock 7-2 victory at Villa Park in October 2020.

Villa have also managed only one victory in 30 Premier League away games against reigning champions, beating Manchester United 1-0 at Old Trafford in December 2009.
