The Boston Celtics managed to return to the top of the mountain in the NBA back in 2024 when they defeated the Dallas Mavericks in the NBA Finals. Before that, the C’s hadn’t won a championship since 2008, when they were led by franchise legend Paul Pierce. With Pierce teaming up alongside Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen, Boston cruised to victory in the 2007-08 season, and it seemed like a dynasty was in the process of being born. While that ended up being that group’s only championship victory together, they did a lot of winning during their time on the court. Another guy who played a big role for these Celtics teams was Rajon Rondo, who gradually turned himself into a star at the point guard position. With a bunch of big egos and star players, though, things would get fiery between the folks on the team from time to time. According to Pierce, nobody was safe, not even head coach Doc Rivers. Pierce revealed that after Rivers got on Rondo’s case one time, the four-time All-Star squared up and tried to fight his head coach, much to the shock of the rest of his team. “He squared up with Doc one day,” Pierce said of Rondo on “No Fouls Given.” “Doc got on him, I think it was either a game or the playoffs, and they just squared up. We kind of looked like, ‘Hold on, is they about to squabble?’ I’ll never forget it, but it didn’t go down.” Story continues below advertisement Rondo and Rivers ultimately didn’t end up fighting, but this goes to show just how fiery these Celtics teams were. They wanted to win so badly that sometimes, it resulted in their competitive spirit getting unleashed on one another. The 2024 C’s squad didn’t feature a similar dynamic, but they still managed to win a title anyway. In the present, Boston will look to win its third-straight game on Friday night when it kicks off its 2025 NBA Cup action with a matchup against the Philadelphia 76ers.
