Miami Dolphins part ways with GM Chris grier after Thursday night collapse

The Miami Dolphins have made a seismic change to their football operations, announcing that general manager Chris Grier and the franchise have mutually agreed to part ways, effective immediately.

The decision was confirmed just hours after the team suffered a demoralising 28-6 home defeat to the Baltimore Ravens on Thursday Night Football, which cemented their disastrous 2-7 record.

Grier, who had been with the organisation for 26 years and served as general manager since 2016, exits with immediate effect, with senior personnel executive Champ Kelly taking the reins as interim general manager leading into next week’s trade deadline.

Owner cites need for immediate improvement

Dolphins Chairman Stephen Ross issued a statement confirming the news, emphasising that the team's poor on-field performance could no longer be overlooked.

“As I assessed the state of the team and in my discussions with Chris, it became clear to both of us that change could not wait,” Ross stated.

“We must improve, in 2025, 2026 and beyond, and it needs to start right now.”

The move comes surprisingly before a decision is announced regarding current head coach Mike McDaniel, whose record now stands at 30-30.

The Dolphins failed to make the playoffs last season after two consecutive appearances, and the current trajectory cemented the need for a front-office shake-up.

Grier’s tenure: One of high spending and high frustration

Grier’s tenure as general manager was marked by several massive financial commitments aimed at building a championship roster, including the extensions for Tua Tagovailoa and major contracts for stars like Tyreek Hill and Jalen Ramsey.

However, despite the star power, the team has failed to win a playoff game since 2000, the longest drought in the NFL.

With Champ Kelly now in charge, the focus immediately shifts to the November 4th trade deadline.

It is expected that Kelly will now re-evaluate all assets, which could place players like Jaelan Phillips and Bradley Chubb on the market in what might become a flurry of end-of-season moves.
