Why Grizzlies' court is gray tonight vs. Lakers in NBA Cup in-season tournament game

The NBA Cup has arrived.

And with it comes some pretty unique court designs.

That includes Friday night's game between the Memphis Grizzlies and Los Angeles Lakers, played on the Grizzlies' home floor.

Memphis is breaking out a subtle gray look for its court, one of the smoother layouts on offer as all the NBA teams get to break out their unique floor looks.

Why is the Grizzlies' court gray?

The Memphis Grizzlies have a gray court tonight because it's the NBA Cup, formerly known as the in-season tournament.

When NBA teams play their cup games, they swap out their floor for a spruced-up, alternative color version. It is meant to signify that this is a different event.

NBA Cup games still count in the regular season standings, so it's still part of the 1-of-82, but there's also a separate trophy on the line through group play and an elimination bracket for this tourney that's now in its third season.

Memphis has chosen the gray look for its floor, with a navy outline. Some teams go with a bolder color, but the gray ends up looking pretty smooth (and a lot like something the Memphis Tigers have tried at the collegiate level).

It'll definitely still be very cool to watch Ja Morant and company do their thing on that floor.
