Detroit Lions expect to be without All-Pro safety vs. Vikings

ALLEN PARK -- Detroit Lions All-Pro safety Kerby Joseph is expected to miss his second straight game due to a knee injury.

Dan Campbell said he doesn’t see Joseph playing against the Minnesota Vikings this Sunday after missing another week of practice.

Joseph missed the game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers heading into the bye week. The Lions were hopeful that extra time off heading into the week away would help his knee calm down. And while they believe resting Joseph is a need right now, there is some hope moving forward.

“He’s going to need a little bit here,” the Lions coach said. “So, the negative is yeah, I don’t think he’s going to play. The positive is he is getting better. He really is. It’s just, you know, it’s just it’s going to take a minute here. So, that’s that’s kind of where we’re at.”

On the bright side, the Lions will still have less holes to fill in the secondary than they did the last time they took the field. Safety Brian Branch is back after serving his one-game suspension. And second-year cornerback Terrion Arnold is trending in the right way after practicing all week.

Arnold has missed two consecutive games due to a shoulder injury. But he received a positive second opinion after it sounded like he could miss most of the rest of the season. Now, last year’s first-round pick has a real chance of missing only two games.

“He’s looked pretty good in practice,” Campbell said of Arnold

The Lions started Erick Hallett II and Thomas Harper with Branch and Joseph out against the Buccaneers. They are both options to see playing time with Joseph out. Avonte Maddox has also been back at practice this week after missing two games due to a hamstring injury.

Maddox provides veteran depth all over the secondary and is another option to watch. Harper feels like the odds-on favorite heading into the weekend, since he’s seen action in two straight games.
