Newcastle United forward William Osula is expected to stay at the club in January despite interest from English and overseas sides, Daily Mail journalist Craig Hope has revealed.

The 22-year-old attacker was close to leaving St James’ Park in the summer transfer window, as Newcastle had a £30m deal agreed for his sale to Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt.

Magpies chiefs have since grown impressed with Osula’s development and believe there is no better player on the market at the same price and profile, making his exit at the turn of the year highly unlikely.

Osula has been a regular under Eddie Howe this term, featuring in all of Newcastle’s nine Premier League games and scoring once in the 3-2 loss to Liverpool in September.

The Denmark U21 international also netted twice in Newcastle’s 4-1 win over Bradford in the Carabao Cup and registered an assist in their 4-0 win against Union SG in the Champions League earlier this month.

According to Hope, Osula was ‘hours away’ from joining Frankfurt in September, before the German side instead attempted to secure a loan move rather than a permanent transfer for the 22-year-old.

Newcastle pulled the plug on the deal and seemingly have no regrets over their decision, with Osula emerging as a squad regular amid Yoane Wissa’s lengthy injury layoff.

The DR Congo international, who joined the Magpies for £55m from Brentford during the summer transfer window, has yet to play for his new club.

He picked up a knee injury on international duty against Senegal in September and is expected to return in November, with Osula and Nick Woltemade sharing duties up front in Wissa’s absence.

Osula joined Newcastle from Sheffield United in August last year on a five-year contract and made 19 appearances in his first season at St James’ Park, scoring two goals.

The 22-year-old forward has won 15 caps for Denmark Under-21s to date, netting eight goals and providing three assists.

Keeping Osula at St James’ Park appears to be a wise move for both the club and the player.

According to Hope’s report, Newcastle’s hierarchy believe there is no player on the market with the same profile and price, which makes it a sensible decision to retain him amid PSR constraints.
