There was a lot of hype on the New York Giants defense entering the 2025 NFL season. The Giants have a 2-6 record and fans can not deny the talent on the defensive side of the football.

Many New York fans blame defensive coordinator Shane Bowen for this record. Had head coach Brian Daboll kept Wink Martindale as the defensive coordinator, the Giants would be at least 4-4 right now. New York’s defense doesn’t look well coached at all. There is a reason why the players do no trust him as the defensive coordinator and he should have been fired either after they lost to the Dallas Cowboys or the Denver Broncos.

As the Giants prepare for the 5-3 San Francisco 49ers this weekend, many people are wondering if there will be any changes with this talented defense or if it will still continue to be poorly coached. Dan Duggan of the Athletic wrote about what has gone wrong for the Giants defense this season despite the talent they have on the roster.
He believes that a major problem for this defense has been the defensive coordinator and said,
“Now the Giants face a 49ers offense that is surprisingly pedestrian, ranking 25th in the league in scoring. The Giants’ defense has shown glimpses of being a top unit. The unit appeared to be turning a corner for a seven-quarter stretch in Weeks 6-7 when it held the Eagles and Broncos to a combined 17 points. The defense abruptly fell off a cliff, allowing an incomprehensible 71 points over the past five quarters, covering New York’s 33-32 fourth-quarter collapse in Denver and a 38-20 blowout loss in Philadelphia last week.
The biggest concern as the Giants prepare for a stretch against some of the league’s best offenses — Green Bay, Detroit, New England — is that Bowen hasn’t shown any signs of being able to fix a defense that entered the season with such promise.”
The Giants have given up 382.4 yards per game this season and that is the fourth most yards given up in the NFL. They have given up 233.5 yards passing per game. That’s the ninth most in the NFL. They have given up 148.9 yards per game on the ground. That is the third most rushing yards given up in the NFL this season. New York has also given up 26.9 points per game which is the seventh most in the NFL.
It is obvious that Bowen has failed this defense big time this season despite having big names on the roster. If the defense continues to suck under him, they have to fire him before the season ends or he will be fired along with head coach Brian Daboll, general manager Joe Schoen, and others once the season ends for the Giants. New York made a massive mistake getting rid of Wink for Bowen a couple of years ago.
