After a first-round exit in the 2025 NBA playoff, the Lakers decided to give Doncic the keys to the car. This decision reportedly added more fuel to the rumors about James. The veteran has yet to make his debut in the 2025-26 campaign, and his future remains a question mark to fans.

During an appearance on Andrew Schultz’s “Flagrant,” insider Shams Charania named three players whose situations could lead to a change of air: Giannis Antetokounmpo, Trae Young and James. When it came to James, Charania said that anything could happen to him.
“I think it’s very much up in the air,” Charania said. “I’m not sure that he knows exactly how the end is going to play out. Could it be with the Lakers? Sure, but he’s a free agent at the end of the season, so if he’s gonna continue to play, there’s clearly a chance he’s somewhere else.”

James played 70 games last season, averaging 24.4 points, 7.8 rebounds and 8.2 assists per game. He shot 51.3% from the field while helping the Lakers secure the No. 3 seed in the Western Conference.
The Lakers already entered a new era with Doncic leading the way, which could make James leave the team soon. The Slovenian guard is one of the best players in the league and the clear heir to lead the purple and gold for the foreseeable future.
