ALLEN PARK – Dan Campbell was no stranger to team Halloween parties during his NFL playing days, which he shared — and then some — when speaking to reporters on Friday.
The Detroit Lions coach took a question about his and his wife, Holly, participating in the annual October celebration, and Campbell revealed one of the more unique costumes he once wore.
“We dressed up a little bit. We had a few. I answered this the other day, I don’t know if (Lions team reporter) Dannie (Rogers) was in there, but I was Marilyn Monroe one year,” Campbell shared.
“That was a long time ago, and that wasn’t here. I’m sure you can find some old stuff. But anyway, we paired up pretty good, let’s just put it that way. Holly’s the creative one. She always had pretty good ideas and stuff.”
With Campbell carrying a massive 6-foot-5, 260-plus-pound frame, the thought of him dressing up as the late actress and singer — who reportedly stood at 5-foot-5 — is quite the visual, to say the least.
Campbell then explained the origin of the idea.
“Well, actually, that one — her sister came in, so it was really more her and her sister than it was us paired up,” Campbell said. “So I was the odd one out, but I was Marilyn Monroe. She brought me a freaking dress. I had wigs, too. And actually, I had a broken ankle, so I was on crutches, too. So that was great.”
And for those who might be wondering -- yes, the photo does indeed exist, as confirmed by his wife on social media.
“It was before social media was big,” Mrs. Campbell said. “I’ll have to dig in the basement.”
MLive Lions reporter Benjamin Raven quickly followed up, commending Campbell on being a “good sport” about it, to which the Lions coach shot back with a media-room-pleasing reply.
“Yeah, I guess so. I guess so. Alcohol helps,” Campbell chuckled.
As for how he plans to celebrate Halloween this year, Campbell shared that his household plans to hand out candy to trick-or-treaters who make their way to his doorstep — revealing what they can expect to find in their bags or buckets.
“It’ll be Reese’s. We love Reese’s, man. Buttercups, M&M’s, peanut M&M’s. That’s usually been the staples. That’s where we go,” Campbell said. “It’s not the caramel apples or anything, but that’s kind of what we give.”
