Kompany's Bayern nearing Pep milestone

The race is on for Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany to beat the best-ever start to a Bundesliga campaign. With Pep Guardiola's 2015/16 feat now firmly in their sights, the current Bavarian crop are beginning to sense a new division-defining high in their bones.

The Bayern of 2025/26 have begun the campaign in spellbinding form. Winning all eight Bundesliga games with a goal difference of +26 had never before been achieved - until now.

Yet the all-time winning run to begin a German top-flight season still stands at 10 victories and it is Guardiola - in charge at Bayern between 2013 and 2016 - who still proudly holds onto that spectacular opening sequence.

Remarkably, comparing Kompany's 42 Bundesliga matches in charge at Bayern so far and the 102 games Pep clocked up during his time in the division, both coaches share the exact-same average of points per game: 2.52.

However, when the current Manchester City boss had racked up the same amount of top-tier matches in Germany that Kompany now has under his belt, the former edges his Belgian counterpart.

After his first 42 Bundesliga games, Kompany's Bayern have collected 106 points (33 wins, seven draws, two defeats). Guardiola, meanwhile, had amassed 110 points (35 wins, five draws, two losses) after his first 42 Bundesliga matches at the Bayern helm.

Of course, for Kompany's Bayern to now make it to Matchday 10 winning every game still requires a monumental effort, especially given that the record champions are next at home to a Bayer Leverkusen side unbeaten in their last 37 Bundesliga matches on the road. Following that, a tricky trip to Union Berlin awaits on Matchday 10.

Should they successfully overcome those obstacles, today's Bayern will need to keep the goal difference obtained by Guardiola's team (+29) in their thoughts.

It's a fascinating challenge and - although perhaps not a priority given the main goal of defending their top-flight title - would be one that Kompany and his team would be proud to achieve.

Speaking after Bayern's latest Bundesliga triumph at Borussia Mönchengladbach, Kompany said, "We can’t stop now and have to keep going; we have good momentum. We can’t get too arrogant. We must stay calm, work hard, and deliver a result in the next game."
