**This summer saw Newcastle United finally manage to shake Jamal Lewis from the wage bill after the left-back had many failed attempts to exit the club.**
Newcastle thought they'd cracked it last season when the Northern Ireland international went to Sao Paulo on loan with a permanent move expected to follow.
However, as has often been the case, the 27-year-old picked up an injury after just six games and given the severity of the injury, Sao Paulo pulled the plug on the loan and sent him back to Newcastle.
Eddie Howe registered Lewis as part of the Newcastle squad for the second part of the season, purely because he had a gap to fill, but there was never any real danger of him seeing any actual competitive football.

Jamal Lewis: Back in the game
Jamal Lewis never lived up to the potential he was supposed to have
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Lewis signed for Newcastle from Norwich City for around £15 million in 2020, arriving with a ton of promise, but it just never clicked for him.
It didn't take Eddie Howe long to realise he didn't have what it takes to be part of his Newcastle United set-up, but because of his wages, finding a new club for him was borderline impossible.
Finally, Lewis' contract expired in the summer of 2025, and he left Newcastle United.
Jamal Lewis could be playing in the Championship this weekend
-------------------------------------------------------------
Jamal Lewis had been without a club ever since. Until today, as it has been reported by the [BBC](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/articles/cq6z5e8lrnro) that Preston North End have picked him up on a short-term deal.
Lewis has signed for Preston until the end of December as Paul Heckingbottom's side has been blighted by injuries, and he could make his debut against Southampton this weekend.
We've been harsh on Lewis in the past, but we wish him all the best and hope that he can play his way to a permanent move to Deepdale and get his career back on track.
