It happens to the best of us. Typos, oversights, random mistakes. It isn’t a big deal that the Milwaukee Bucks‘ official YouTube account misspelled Ryan Rollins’ name in the title of his press conference video. Coming off Rollins’ career-best 32 points in a Giannis-less win over the Warriors, it’s also hilarious. Ryan Rollings? Who else didn’t know the Bucks had a Ryan Rollings on the roster?
“Bro dropped 30 and y’all can’t even spell his name right 💀,” one YouTuber commented.
Although unintentionally and only by coincidence, the minor miscue hammers home his status as an unknown around the league. No doubt Warriors fans peered into the screen in last night’s game wondering, Who is this guy? Did he really just outplay Stephen Curry?
Well, after pouring in 25 points on national TV against the Knicks and 32 against Golden State, Rollins has put the league on notice. If casual fans and fantasy players hadn’t heard of him before, they certainly have by now.
Rollins is making a name for himself sooner than even Bucks fans expected
It only adds to the cinema that the second of Rollins’ back-to-back career-high scoring performances came against the Warriors. A season after taking him in the second round in 2022 via Atlanta, they traded him away in the deal that made Chris Paul a Warrior.

At that point, Rollins was just an add-on, an afterthought, “young talent” filler after missing most of his rookie year with a foot injury.
Rollins wound up in Milwaukee during the ’23-24 campaign, played most of last year on a two-way contract, and blossomed into a promising 3-and-D player. Having re-signed with the Bucks for three years and $12 million in free agency, Rollins has taken every layer of his game to the next level in the early going this season. The defense and spot up shooting were there last year, but he has seemingly expedited his development as a scorer and playmaker.
Those catch-and-shoot threes he was taking last season turned into smooth stepbacks in the face of Golden State defenders. One game after going 4-of-4 from distance, his 5-7 night versus the Warriors put Curry to shame (he went 4-10 from three for 27 points).

Since entering the lineup in place of the injured Kevin Porter Jr., Rollins has capitalized on the chance to play starting point guard. In five games this season (four starts), he is averaging 18.6 points, five assists, 2.4 steals and only two turnovers. His shooting splits Curry-esque: 52.4/44.4/88.2.
On top of his contributions on offense, he has leveled up his defensive game too. Rollins is hounding opposing guards, subjecting them to full-court pressure, and forcing turnovers.
Despite his thin frame, his stood the test of a physical Warriors defense in their repeated attempts to bump and bruise him off his game. “I didn’t expect nothing different,” he said. I kind of liked it. Just turns me up a little bit more.”

Whenever Porter does come back, Doc Rivers may have a hard time finding a reason not to keep Rollins as the starter. It’s early, but in what many fans hoped would be a breakout year, it looks for all the world like the Rollins leap is already happening. If he keeps it up, his name will be all but impossible to ignore.
