Keith Andrews responds after Newcastle among clubs linked with Igor Thiago

Brentford manager Keith Andrews has addressed Newcastle United’s links with a move for striker Igor Thiago.

Newcastle United moved to sign Yoane Wissa from the Bees this summer and have been tipped to make a move for his former teammate.

Last month, The Chronicle suggested Newcastle had been “alerted” to Thiago as a potential target through intermediaries.

Caught Offside, meanwhile, recently suggested that the Magpies are leading the race to sign the 24-year-old ahead of the likes of Tottenham and Aston Villa.

Brentford signed Thiago from Club Brugge in 2024, though he spent much of his first season at the club injured. This season, however, the Brazilian has scored six Premier League goals in nine games.

Due to his recent exploits, Andrews was asked about the forward’s future at Friday’s pre-match press conference.

Keith Andrews says Newcastle United will not sign Igor Thiago

The former Republic of Ireland international was speaking in a pre-match press conference ahead of his side’s trip to Crystal Palace on Saturday.

Andrews was asked by a reporter: “Reports already this week that Spurs, Newcastle and Villa would like him in January, what do you say to those clubs?”

The Brentford boss responded with: “I’ve said over the past few weeks, I was really happy when the last transfer window closed.

“We’re not even in November, so I’m not going to talk about a transfer window that is two months away, that will inevitably come closer to the time.

“Thiago is going absolutely nowhere, absolutely nowhere, he’s a pivotal part of this football club, he doesn’t want to go anywhere, that won’t be happening.”

Newcastle United have decided on their strikers for the rest of the season

Following the sale of Alexander Isak, Newcastle are expected to have money to spend in the transfer market in January 2026.

However, that doesn’t necessarily mean the club will be active and it’s difficult to see a world in which they sign yet another big money forward so soon after landing Wissa and Nick Woltemade.

Thiago has been in fine form this season but would cost big money and there’s no guarantee he starts ahead of Woltemade anyway.

Indeed, Newcastle will also keep William Osula at the club for the rest of the season at least, so they appear to be well-stocked for strikers.

There’s little doubt that Thiago has impressed this season but the idea of signing him in January always seemed somewhat remote.
