A long time ago, but very much part of the clubs interesting history. Ian McFarlane (1933-2019) had a number of positions at Leicester as well as being one who also experienced a lot of other interesting happenings in his life of football.
McFarlane was a player at Leicester, later returning to be part of management and coaching at the club. He only made one appearance for the club. He joined from Chelsea in 1958, had previously played for Aberdeen. Left Leicester in 1958 to join Bath City, being there until 1967, playing 330 games for the non-league club.
Looking back in history is a funny act. It gives you patterns and paths of different journeys. These journeys build their own special stories. Ian McFarlane was seen as a tough, heft full-back. His only game for Leicester was to deputise Willie Cunningham, being signed from Chelsea for a fee of Β£9000.
He moved on to partner Tony Book in Bathβs 1960 Southern League championship side. He later embarked on a much more successful coaching career. He returned to Filbert Street as assistant manager to both Frank McLintock and Jock Wallace between 1977 and 1982.
In the interim, McFarlane had fulfilled second in command duties at Middlesbrough, Man City and Sunderland, and had held the full managerial reigns at Carlisle, though he almost invariably tended to be associated with highly-motivated yet essentially dour sides.
After leaving Leicester, he had a brief spell as manager of Yeovil Town, and was later chief scout for Leeds.

During his years in football management and coaching, he is known for signing Stan Bowles to Carlisle. Bowles was coming from Crewe. Bowles later went on to play for QPR and England.
He was caretaker manager of Sunderland from 18 October 1976 to 1 December 1976 for 7 games (2 wins, 1 draw, 4 losses. He then managed Leicester City for 5 games in 1978 as caretaker manager, losing 4 and winning once.
