Liverpool loss vs. Aston Villa would equal worst league run for 71 years

Liverpool must not lose against Aston Villa in order to avoid going on their worst losing streak in the league for more than 71 years.

Supporters have seen plenty of poor players come and go during the Premier League era – this team, however, isn’t being dragged down by a lack of quality.

There is plenty of talent in the Reds’ ranks, but it isn’t currently on show. As a result, they have lost four league games in a row and six of their last seven in all competitions.

Defeat against Aston Villa would mean Liverpool losing five consecutive league matches for the first time since 1953 under then manager Don Welsh.

Potential for unwanted records

Liverpool were last defeated in successive league games at Anfield with fans in attendance in September 2012, with both Arsenal and Man United taking maximum points.

The Reds have not lost successive home league games since March 2021, when they were beaten 1-0 by both Chelsea and Fulham without fans in the ground.

The last time they lost three in a row at home in all competitions with fans in the ground was January 2017.

Liverpool have lost only four of their last 84 Premier League fixtures at Anfield. Arne Slot‘s recent run has seen the team not keep a clean sheet in any of the last 10 fixtures.

One point against Villa would see Slot reach 100 points in the Premier League as head coach of Liverpool. He would tie Kenny Dalglish’s record of 100 points in fewer games than any other Reds boss (48).

Mo Salah is one goal short of scoring 250 goals for the club.

Aston Villa are good – but not always against Liverpool

Unai Emery has faced Liverpool on 13 occasions in his career, winning for the only time in his first confrontation in the 2016 Europa League final with Sevilla. Since then he has drawn four and lost eight.

In his 13 encounters, his teams have conceded 34 times without ever keeping a clean sheet.

Since his appointment in November 2022, only Man City (238), Arsenal (238) and Liverpool (232) have taken more Premier League points than Villa’s 198.

Only twice in 13 games this season have Villa conceded more than once in a game.

For only the second time in 93 years, Villa could finish in the top six in the top-flight for a third successive season.

The Reds have scored in all but one of the last 22 league clashes at Anfield. That came in September 2014 when they lost 1-0.

Villa have kept one clean sheet in their last 23 league visits – the 1-0 win in September 2014. The last 16 encounters in all competitions have produced 63 goals, at nearly four goals per game.
