Harvey Elliott could still return to Liverpool as loan clause is revealed

Harvey Elliott’s time with Liverpool may not be over just yet.

The attacking midfielder left Anfield on deadline day in a season-long loan deal to Aston Villa.

Unai Emery’s men snatched the playmaker up on deadline day despite several other clubs, such as RB Leipzig, being interested in Elliott.

Although his loan deal has an obligation to buy included within the clauses, a new update has emerged which could see the Englishman make a remarkable return to Liverpool by the end of the season.

Aston Villa’s obligation to buy is only active once Harvey Elliott plays a certain number of games

Over the years, there have been several different loan deals that clubs have conducted.

In Elliott’s case, most would have expected the midfielder to join the Villans by the end of the 2025-26 campaign, but recently, he’s been out of favour.

This has sparked questions about his future, with a new report from the Daily Mail suggesting that Elliott could become a Liverpool player once again.

The report starts off by saying that Villa’s ‘commitment’ to buy Elliott is only active when a certain number of games have been played.

They then add that ‘in theory’ the Englishman could return to Liverpool in the summer as long as the threshold isn’t met, of course.

However, with his future still under question, a few Bundesliga sides also ‘retain an interest’ in Elliott, which could start a whole new transfer saga in the summer.

Harvey Elliott hasn’t played for Aston Villa as much as he’d have liked to this season

Many fans, pundits, and journalists all thought that Elliott would become a regular starter and thrive in Emery’s system.

So far, he’s only played seven games across all competitions, and he’s only scored once in that time.

In fact, he was even left entirely out of Villa’s squad against Manchester City last weekend.

The youngster wanted to leave Anfield in the summer so that he could get more playing time under his belt, but he’d have probably played more if he’d have just stayed put.

Of course, nobody could have anticipated the way that things have gone for the Reds this season, especially after spending over £450 million in the summer.

However, that’s just the way that things go sometimes and looking back, Elliott may actually wish that he had chosen to stay with Arne Slot’s men, rather than jumping ship.
