Preston Fearon has become the next West Ham player to be rewarded with a new contract within the past few weeks, with his new deal being signed yesterday, keeping him at the club until 2028.

Fearon broke onto the scene in pre-season after having a successful youth campaign. He made his debut in pre-season under Graham Potter, in which the game against Manchester United, he seriously impressed and caught the eye of many West Ham fans. His impressive cameo led to fans being confused as to why he didn’t receive much further gametime, and since the Premier League has started, he’s dwindled down the pecking order.

The young Englishman’s playstyle sees him often pick up the ball from defence and drive the ball forward. He also has an immense ability to pick out a pass, which is one of the many impressive abilities he has and the awareness Fearon utilises levels his game up further than others.

His skill set is exactly what the Hammers could look for at the moment but currently there’s a line of midfielders that are breaking into the first team training, we’ve seen George Earthy return to first team training in the last couple of days, as well as Kante challenging Fearon for a spot considering he also too recently signed a new deal, his one until 2031… does that indicate anything?

It could perhaps indicate that the Hammers believe Kante had more potential and are worried about other teams going after the player in comparison to Fearon himself, who is doing very well, but still flying under the radar.

But, most importantly, the length of the contract may determine how valuable the club see them as an asset, but in terms of who could break into the first team, that’s about talent.

Fearon, for the last two season’s has relentlessly shown that he wants to push into the first team, and if he continues at the current trajectory he is at, he might find himself utilised on matchday, considering how desperately we’re in need of a midfielder who can move the ball forward.
