Reporter reveals fresh update on future of Leeds United duo amid January transfer talk

Illan Meslier and Joel Piroe

Leeds United had a very active summer transfer window. As many as 12 players came in through the doors while 17 went out.

January will also likely see some comings and goings. Daniel Farke’s men need to bolster their attacking line.

Lack of creativity is keeping the team from be further ahead and the board will be smart in acting upon it. However it is not an easy task considering the team’s PSR requirements.

To bring in any new player would mean letting go of existing ones.

Fresh updates on Leeds United duo

Joel Piroe and Illan Meslier are two names who are probably on their way out of Elland Road. Piroe was the Championship’s leading goal scorer last season but he has fallen out of favour.

Promotion to the Premier League has not been kind to the player. According to The Athletic’s Beren Cross, Piroe’s style doesn’t suit the team.

“Barring injuries to Calvert-Lewin and Lukas Nmecha, Piroe is going to have to make do with cameos from the bench for the foreseeable future.”

“We know enough about him to be assured he is not a target man built to hold the ball up as this system requires”, explaining how the system has gone past the man.

Despite lack of game time, he is still valued as the club. The Dutch striker will certainly not be leaving until Leeds can get hold of a suitable replacement in January.

Meslier situation is more clear

Piroe may end up not leaving in January but Meslier is as close to an exit as possible. From being the first choice keeper the Frenchman has now dropped to being the third choice one.

Having got zero game time this season, its a matter of when and not why for Meslier. His contract is also due in June, so Leeds cannot ask for much in the transfer market.

However letting him go for free may benefit both sides. While Meslier may get more gametime, the Whites can offload his wages. A more tempting prospect for Leeds given their financial constraints.
