It's no secret that the Philadelphia Eagles need an edge rusher.
The return of Brandon Graham should help an Eagles pass-rush that has mustered up just 16 sacks this season, but the retirement of Za'Darius Smith hurts and the Eagles needed more help when he was still on the team.
"Getting Brandon [Graham] back [out of retirement] is a nice story, but he’s a part-time player who will only marginally help their pass rush," an NFC scout told FOX Sports' Ralph Vacchiano. "They are getting no push off the edge and Howie knows they can’t win that way."
Vacchiano goes on to name two edge rushers to keep an eye on for Philly, and both of them used to play under defensive coordinator Vic Fangio: Miami Dolphins edge rushers Jaelan Phillips and Bradley Chubb.
"Two names to keep an eye on: Dolphins edge rushers Bradley Chubb and Jaelan Phillips, both of whom played for current Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio when he was with Miami in 2023," Vacchiano wrote.
Fangio was the Dolphins' defensive coordinator for one season in 2023. Under him, Phillips was on smash his career-highs and tallied 6.5 sacks in eight games before he tore his Achilles. Chubb posted the second-most sacks of his career with 11.
With the Dolphins sitting at 2-7, it makes total sense to sell off some their most valuable assets, with Chubb and Phillips being included in that group.
ESPN's Adam Schefter believes one of Chubb or Phillips will be moved, but Miami now becomes a bit tougher to read after the Dolphins and now-former general manager Chris Grier parted ways on Friday.
It remains to be seen if interim general manager Champ Kelly will be more or less inclined than Grier to make moves.
If Chubb and/or Phillips hit the trade block, Philly should most definitely be interested.
Chubb has played well this season with four sacks and 15 pressures despite it being his first year back from a torn ACL.
The veteran is under contract through 2027, which would normally be viewed as a positive feature, but the deal isn't cheap with cap hits of $31 million in each of the next two seasons and large dead-cap hits if a team cuts Chubb.
That's a concerning situation for a player who will turn 30 next year and has a lengthy injury history, but it could also keep his trade price low and there's a scenario where the Dolphins might be willing to pick up some of that money.
Phillips comes with less strings attached, as he's a free agent in 2026, which of course can be viewed as good and bad. He's also just 26 years old, so he could prove to be a long-term solution if he plays his way into a contract extension.
The former first-round pick got off to a slow start this season after he recovered from his own torn ACL suffered in 2024, but he has begun coming on strong the last few games, with two sacks in three contests.
Phillips showed a ton of promise over his first three seasons in the NFL with 22 sacks in 42 games, so we know he's capable of more, and there stands a chance Phillips shows that the further removed he is from the aforementioned injury.
We would suspect the Eagles prefer Phillips over Chubb given the latter's contract situation, but there's no question either one would supply the upgrade Philly so desperately needs.
