Jody Morris has discussed Florian Wirtz’s start to life at Liverpool and is reminded of two attackers he worked with at Chelsea.
Wirtz came to the Premier League with lofty expectations after dominating the Bundesliga and leading them to an unbeaten title as their best player.
He hasn’t been awful, but has made less of an impact than you would expect from a £100 million player.
Morris feels that way, and claims Wirtz is following a similar early trajectory to two fellow countrymen who came to Stamford Bridge.

Jody Morris compares Florian Wirtz to Kai Havertz and Timo Werner
It could be seen as a lazy comparison, given that they’re all Germans who came from the Bundesliga, but there is truth to what he says.
Discussing the 22-year-old on Sky Sports, Morris mentions Kai Havertz and Timo Werner, believing there are similarities in the situations.
He says: “I’ve seen players that have come over from particularly from the German league. I saw it with Kai Havertz, struggling to settle at Chelsea. Timo Werner, as well.
“It was difficult, not just because it was COVID times, but the amount of things that these young players have to deal with.”
Those two evoke mixed emotions from the Chelsea fanbase, having experienced ups and downs in their time at the club.
Lothar Matthaus claims Chelsea ruined Werner’s career, and you can see why he thinks that. He was a highly-touted young talent when he made the move to London, but has since failed to reach those same heights from RB Leipzig.
Havertz has done well since leaving Chelsea for Arsenal, but he was a player who frustrated at times. That said, his winning goal in the Champions League final gives him leeway in the eyes of the Stamford Bridge faithful.
Chelsea wanted Wirtz a year ago
Despite a chequered past with Bundesliga acquisitions, Chelsea wanted to sign Wirtz after his amazing 2023/24 season.
Now that he has gone to Anfield, fans will be happy to see him struggle at a rival club. Troy Deeney labelled Joao Pedro a better signing than Wirtz, and off the first few months alone, he’s right.
But as much as Chelsea fans will wish otherwise, it’s highly likely the German comes good.

He has already shown flashes of quality, and at 22, he has so much time to find his place in the side.
The Blues won’t lament missing out on him too much, though. Cole Palmer has become the guy in that position, and Estevao Willian is ascending behind him.
Chelsea are sorted in that regard.
