Ruben Amorim has admitted Manchester United could be busy in the January transfer window - with outgoings and incomings on the agenda.

Flop striker Joshua Zirkzee is a prime example of someone who is looking to exit the club, having not started a single match this season and only making five appearances. Homegrown midfielder Kobbie Mainoo – who considered loan options in the summer – has also found playing time hard to come by, limited to brief appearances off the bench in the Premier League.

Both have subsequently fallen down the pecking order for their respective countries this year. And Amorim acknowledged that with next year's World Cup looming, players will be keen to secure January transfers to ensure regular football. When asked about the winter transfer window, the Red Devils boss said: "A lot of things can happen.

"Even in our club, and you know that we have the World Cup, some players are not playing, they will ask to leave, so I have to manage everything."

Amorim didn't rule out the possibility of new arrivals during the January window either, reports the Mirror. He said: "We want to bring players, everyone here, we want to bring players that we can see a big future in Manchester United.

"We are not just buying one guy because now we feel in December that we need this kind of player for now. We want to buy players that we know we are not going to change a lot of times. So that is our idea.

"I don't know what is going to happen. But of course, we think about how we can improve the team, and in January, the window is open, we can do something."

United snapped up Ayden Heaven and Patrick Dorgu last winter. Those represented their first permanent mid-season acquisitions since Amad's switch from Atalanta in 2021.

Team captain and talisman Bruno Fernandes was also a crucial signing 12 months earlier. Mega flop Alexis Sanchez was the most recent one before that in 2018.

Former Chelsea star Juan Mata also emerges as a notable January capture from 2014. Wilfried Zaha, Sir Alex Ferguson's final signing, also came mid-season, though they immediately loaned the winger back to Crystal Palace.

The likes of Anders Lindegaard and Victor Valdes feature amongst the less celebrated examples. Jack Butland, Marcel Sabitzer and Wout Weghorst are also just a handful who have arrived on loan during January.
