Show more respect! Mary Earps slammed by Chelsea boss Sonia Bompastor over 'bitter' Hannah Hampton comments

The goalkeeper, who is a two-time The Best FIFA award winner, revealed the details in her new autobiography - 'All In'.

Earps claimed Hampton was 'disruptive and unreliable' and that her behaviour at Euro 2022 was at risk of becoming 'destructive'.

She wrote: “Her behaviour behind the scenes at the Euros had frequently risked derailing training sessions and team resources.

“The only negative that each group reported back on was that behaviour, which was overwhelmingly considered disruptive and unreliable, with a risk of being destructive, taking energy and time from coaches who needed to work with the rest of the team on set-pieces, mentality and of course goalkeeping sessions.

“It affected us all in a domino effect to an extent that was extremely unusual in a successful elite team environment.

“It also completely contradicted my professional values, which included preserving everything I had, mentally and physically, for performance and for a goalkeeper union where everyone, whatever their role, had the space and support to be great at their job.”

What has Bompastor said?

But Earps' harsh words on Hampton have led to the latter's club manager, Bompastor, speaking out and defending her.

Hampton joined Chelsea in 2023, with Bompastor becoming boss a year later and picking her in between the sticks every week.

And, speaking exclusively to talkSPORT, the French football icon has taken aim at ex-England No.1 Earps for her comments.

Bompastor said: "For me, Hannah is fine, it's never nice when someone makes these comments about yourself as a person.

"I think you need to show more respect because, for me, values are important.

"I think on Mary Earps' comments, you need to show respect to your teammate, show respect to your manager.

"Just to give that many details, that's not something I would like to have if I was her."

Bompastor then continued: "Now, I think the most important thing is to say who Hannah is.

"I think she is a great goalkeeper, I already said that she is the best goalkeeper in the world.

"But also, as a person, I think from when I joined Chelsea, I'm really pleased with who Hannah is and I told her already she should be proud of who she is."

Earps vs Hampton

Earps' frustration at Hampton and England manager Wiegman stems from the decision to drop her last year.

Wiegman opted to play Hampton as her new No.1 before Euro 2025, with Earps' minutes for her country massively dwindling.

In her autobiography, the ex-Manchester United goalkeeper revealed she told the Lionesses boss after Hampton took her spot: “I don’t get it. It’s a qualifier match. And bad behaviour is being rewarded.”

Earps was then told that Hampton would be No.1 ahead of the major tournament earlier this summer.

And in May, she decided to retire from international football, in what at the time seemed a strange decision to close to the Euros.

Hampton then led England to glory with multiple star performances, saving two penalties in the final before lifting the trophy.

She is now hoping for further success with Chelsea, while Earps is No.1 goalkeeper for Paris Saint-Germain in France.
