‘We were way better’ – Daniel Farke reacts to Leeds’ embarrassing 3-0 defeat at Brighton

Daniel Farke

Leeds United manager Daniel Farke put up a brave front following their defeat against Brighton at the American Express Stadium earlier this afternoon.

Leeds suffered an embarrassing 3-0 as the team dropped down to 16th place. Danny Welbeck scored the opener in the 11th minute to give Brighton the lead. Diego Gomez then scored two in the 64th and 70th minute to secure all three points.

Daniel Farke feels his team were better

Despite the heavy defeat, the German felt Leeds were the better side in the first half. He admitted that his team had a rocky start but he liked how they handled it.

Speaking to the press post the game, Farke revealed, “We did not start well. They scored out of this.”

“Brighton wants to invite you to open the block and if you are 1-0 down it’s difficult”, explaining the difficulty in facing an opponent of the Seagull’s defensive capabilities.

“I quite liked how we handled it, we were way better.

“Free kicks and corners, delivery not great though. Started second half well”, adding that his team could have handled the set pieces better.

On second half substitutions

The 49-year old boss tried to change things up in the second. Sean Longstaff was taken off with Anton Stach taking his place in at the hour mark.

Minutes later Dominic Calvert-Lewin too was subbed out as Lukas Nmecha took to the field. The changes almost worked as both of them had got a shot on target. But the elusive goal didn’t arrive.

“Tried to get a foot back in the door with Nmecha and Stach. Reaction good in last moments”, the manager felt.

“But poor start was crucial and cheap goals in the second half”, as he dismissed the way the goals were conceded.

Nmecha and Stach’s shots on the goal were the only two instances for Leeds in the entire game as Leeds ended the match with an xG of 0.46.
