Vikings predicted to acquire veteran quarterback help in trade with NFC team

The Minnesota Vikings have a quarterback problem as they prepare for their Week 9 game against the Detroit Lions.

The Vikings are welcoming back starter J.J. McCarthy from injury this week, but what they get out of him remains to be seen. The jury is still very much out on McCarthy, who has had one good quarter out of the eight he has played in.

Minnesota also lacks a veteran insurance policy behind him just in case McCarthy gets hurt again or struggles. Their previous veteran option, Carson Wentz, is now out for the season with a shoulder injury.

As the trade deadline rapidly approaches, the Vikings should be looking to acquire a veteran signal-caller and Rob Gullo of College Sports Network predicts they will do just that by striking a deal with the New York Giants for Russell Wilson.

With Carson Wentz done for the year with a shoulder injury, the Minnesota Vikings have two rookie quarterbacks active on its roster that have combined to start just two career games. If JJ McCarty suffers another injury, they’re in deep trouble. Adding Russell Wilson would give them insurance and a good emergency option if needed for a cheap price.

Wilson began the year as the Giants' starter, but he struggled mightily en route to getting benched for rookie Jaxson Dart.

Wilson now serves as Dart's backup, but with Jameis Winston also on the roster, he is very much expendable.

We know Wilson isn't what he once was, but he's certainly a more reliable option than the other quarterbacks Minnesota has on its roster in rookie Max Brosmer and veteran John Wolford, who hasn't thrown a pass in the NFL since 2022.

We also know that Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell has a way with quarterbacks, so it's conceivable Wilson's game could improve.

Seeing as how he's on the decline and slated for free agency in 2026, Wilson should not cost more than a late Day 3 pick. Combined with Minnesota's need, the low price for Wilson makes acquiring him a no-brainer for the Vikings.
