Alan Shearer was impressed by Arsenal’s use of Riccardo Calfiori and Jurrien Timber
Shearer has admitted Arsenal’s use of Riccardo Calfiori and Jurrien Timber against Burnley really impressed him.
Calfiori and Timber are quickly establishing themselves as Arteta’s first-choice full-backs for the Gunners after producing yet more impressive displays.
The Spanish head coach has given the pair the licence to get forward, and it has given the North Londoners a whole new dynamic in attack.

Shearer told BBC Sport: “Arsenal were magnificent in the first half. I can’t see a weakness. They’ve scored again from a set-piece, but there’s been so much more than that in the performance.
“I like the way they’re using Calfiori and Timber in advanced positions to create overloads and win set-piece opportunities. They’re fantastically well drilled, incredible physically, it’s the first time I’ve seen them live in a long time.”
Following the win over Crystal Palace last weekend, Calfiori and Timber’s importance was hailed, with the pair once again shining away at Turf Moor.
Steve Bruce picks Riccardo Calfiori as Arsenal’s most impressive player
Steve Bruce has named Calfiori as Arsenal’s most impressive player in their 2-0 win, given just how well organised they looked at the back.
When asked what impressed him most about the Gunners against Burnley, the former Premier League manager told BBC Radio 5 Live Extra: “Their organisation. Their defence, the way they get after the ball, I don’t think Burnley have had a shot on goal yet, you can understand why they’re so good defensively.
“The gaps between them, the spaces, so well drilled, physically, they have that ability to be commanding, the left-back is mightily impressive, the left-back in particular has impressed me today.”
The Italian defender is finally getting the recognition he deserves in North London, and rightfully so, given the way he attacks.
