NFL Hits Steelers’ Metcalf With Hefty Fine For Actions Against Packers

Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver DK Metcalf has been fined for his unnecessary roughness penalty in the fourth quarter of Week 8’s loss to the Green Bay Packers. Per the NFL’s weekly fine sheet, Metcalf’s wallet is $12,172 lighter.

Metcalf’s penalty was just as costly on the field. His post-snap jab into LB Quay Walker’s helmet marked Pittsburgh’s offense back 15 yards, turning 3rd and 2 into 3rd and 17. Metcalf also grabbed and yanked Walker’s helmet forward.

The drive ended in a punt.

Pittsburgh finished the game 1-of-10 on third down, including failing to convert its final nine attempts. The Steelers were penalized six times for 65 yards in the game.

Metcalf’s actions were part of the Steelers’ second half unravelling to the Packers. Outside linebacker Nick Herbig was flagged for a 15 yard unnecessary roughness call. The NFL did not fine his actions. A T.J. Watt facemask penalty at the end of the first half also did not levy a fine. The Steelers were outscored 28-9 in the second, turning a 16-7 halftime lead into a 35-25 home loss.

No Packers’ player was fined for his actions in the game.

Metcalf finished the game with five receptions for 55 yards and one touchdown. On the season, he’s notched 27 receptions for 461 yards and five scores and is the Steelers’ clear leader in every major receiving category. Pittsburgh acquired Metcalf from the Seattle Seahawks this March in exchange for a second round pick. As part of the deal, Metcalf signed a five-year extension with the team.

Fines are predetermined amounts set forth by the CBA and increase a designated percentage each season. All fine money goes to NFL charities.
