Eagles-Giants controversy: NFLs verdict is in on hit that ended Cam Skattebo’s season

The NFL released its fines for Week 8 at 4 p.m. Saturday and Eagles linebacker Zack Baun was not listed among them.

That decision will not make a large portion of Giants fans happy because there was a strong feeling that Baun was guilty of a hip-drop tackle on the second-quarter play that ended rookie running back Cam Skattebo’s season.

The play occurred with 8:11 left in the second quarter of the Eagles’ 38-20 win over the Giants at Lincoln Financial Field. Skattebo went across the middle and was the target of a short pass from quarterback Jaxson Dart.

Baun made the pass defense from behind and Skattebo was in immediate pain and unable to stand up. He was carted off the field and taken to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, where he underwent surgery to repair a dislocated right ankle. Skattebo, via an X post, later sent a message of thanks to the city of Philadelphia and his doctors. He also received a visit from Dom DiSandro, the Eagles head of security.

“Thank you everyone for the support!!” Skattebo said. “Surgery went well. I just want to thank the city of Philly for taking the best care of me. Every moment I spent in the hospital with family and friends I felt loved and supported in every way thank you to the doctors, surgeons, and staff that did their best work on me. This is just the beginning of my journey and I can’t wait to show you guys all about it!!! GOD has a plan for me , stick the course and it will all work itself out , BRB”

Many Giants’ fans, however, wanted Baun fined and suspended for his hit on Skattebo. The league disagreed.

Eagles linebacker Jeremiah Trotter Jr. was fined $5,790 for a blindside block on a third-quarter special teams play and Giants defensive tackle Raheem Nunez-Roches was fined $23,186 for using his helmet on Saquon Barkley on the Eagles’ first offensive play of the game.
