Detroit Lions elevate linebacker, downgrade injured safety to out vs. Vikings

ALLEN PARK -- The Detroit Lions made two minor transactions ahead of Sunday afternoon’s game against the Minnesota Vikings.

They elevated linebacker Ty Summers from their practice squad and downgraded safety Daniel Thomas to out. Thomas remains on injured reserve. He had his 21-day return window opened earlier this week, and still has a couple of weeks to work back from a broken forearm before he must be activated.

Summers has made a couple of trips between the main roster and practice squad in his month back in Detroit. He’ll get another chance with Zach Cunningham (hamstring) on injured reserve and Malcolm Rodriguez not yet ready to return.

Rodriguez returned to practice for the first time since last November earlier this week. The linebacker had his 21-day return window opened as he nears his return from an ACL injury. He has already been ruled out for Sunday, so Summers will add depth once again.

Summers has played 26 snaps on special teams across two games for the Lions this season.

Heading into Sunday’s game against the Vikings, the Lions have ruled out safety Kerby Joseph (knee), running back Craig Reynolds (hamstring), Rodriguez and Thomas. Left tackle Taylor Decker (Shoulder), defensive back Avonte Maddox (hamstring and running back Sione Vaki (groin) are questionable.

Decker is expected to play for the second straight game. And the plan was for Vaki to make his return after a month-plus this weekend, too.

Second-year cornerback Terrion Arnold is off the injury report and set to return after a two-game absence. Arnold (shoulder) does not have an injury designation and is good to go against the Vikings.

Minnesota made two minor transactions on Saturday, as well. The Vikings elevated cornerback Fabian Moreau and tight end Nick Vannett from their practice squad for their trip to Detroit.
