Titans trade rumor gives Bills perfect low-cost, high-upside defensive lineman target

The Buffalo Bills need to acquire more help along the defensive line, but they'll have to bargain shop a bit to get that done.

The Bills have been wrecked by injuries upfront, with Ed Oliver, DeWayne Carter and T.J. Sanders all on injured reserve, and with DaQuan Jones dealing with a calf injury that has kept him out multiple games.

The problem is that the Bills only have $1.6 million in cap space right now, so there isn't any room for a huge splash for an expensive player, which greatly limits their ability to adequately fill their need.

But there might be a solution yet: according to The Athletic's Dianna Russini, the Titans are fielding calls for defensive lineman T'Vondre Sweat.

"The players the Titans are fielding the most calls on: DE Arden Key, LB Dre’Mont Jones, RB Tony Pollard and DT T’Vondre Sweat," Russini writes.

Now, taking calls on a player doesn't mean a team intends on trading him, but AtoZ Sports' Easton Freeze, who is a beat writer for the Titans, suggests it's very possible Sweat gets moved.

"I do not think the Tennessee Titans will trade DT T’Vondre Sweat this year. But I’m here to tell you it’s a much more real possibility than you probably think. I won’t be surprised if it happens, and you shouldn’t either," Freeze said.

A 2024 second-round pick of the Titans, Sweat has shown a ton of promise over his first season-plus in the NFL.

Sweat has totaled respectable Pro Football Focus pass-rush grades of 64.7 and 65.1 while tallying four sacks and 26 pressures over 20 games. His run defense grades of 75.0 and 67.2 are above average, which is important to note because the Bills have one of the NFL's worst run defenses.

Another attractive thing about Sweat is his contract. He's still on his rookie deal and it extends through the 2027 season, so not only could the Bills afford him now and in the future, he'll be around for more than just a half of a season.

If Sweat continues his ascension, he could form an elite duo up the middle with Oliver in 2026. For now, he would offer a massive upgrade (literally and figuratively) on the interior for Buffalo.

It might be hard to imagine the rebuilding Titans trading a good young player like Sweat, but the current Titans regime isn't the one that drafted him, so it's not far-fetched at all.

If Tennessee makes Sweat available, the Bills should be all over it because he may be the only low-cost option at the deadline that can actually make a difference.
