Dominik Szoboszlai misses a good chance for Liverpool in their win over Aston Villa, one of the few mistakes the outstanding midfielder mad
Liverpool ended a four-game losing streak in the Premier League with deserved victory against Aston Villa at Anfield on Saturday evening. Mohamed Salah opened the scoring when capitalising on a bad error from Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez in first-half injury time before Ryan Gravenberch's deflected strike shortly before the hour sealed a 2-0 victory.
The result means Arne Slot's side have now back into the top four and remain seven points behind runaway leaders Arsenal.
The ECHO was in attendance at Anfield and here we run the rule over the performance of the players.
Giorgi Mamardashvili 7
Made decent stops from range from Cash and Rogers in the first half and watched the latter hit the post. Comfortable second half.
Conor Bradley 7
Tough battle up against the grisly McGinn but good recovery speed got him out of some potential scrapes, not least with good challenge on Guessand in the second half.
Ibrahima Konate 6
Solid enough early on but almost gifted Villa a chance with some dozy defending inside his own area. No mistakes second half.
Virgil van Dijk 7
One good block denied Guessand and helped push Liverpool high up the pitch. Covered when required as Villa sought a way back into game.
Andy Robertson 7
Dependable showing down the left and tried to get upfield when possible and took set-pieces. May now be first-choice again.
Ryan Gravenberch 8
Showed why he was missed when injured with an energetic performance, covering plenty of ground in midfield and plugging occasional gaps. Willingness to shoot resulted in deflected second.
Alexis Mac Allister 7
Much more mobile and sharp than recently, used the ball well and effort blocked by Konsa before teeing up Gravenberch for second goal.
Mohamed Salah 8
Had much the better of Digne before interval but let down by occasional poor touch or decision until fine finish for opportunist opener sparked very good second-half showing.
Dominik Szoboszlai 9
Back in the number 10 role, led the press well and integral in much of the attacking play. Had free-kick saved but should have scored after robbing Torres, the only negative of a fine display.
Cody Gakpo 7
Overcame a poor start to start to create problems when cutting inside and won one free-kick first half. Kept possession intelligently the longer the game progressed and good physicality.
Hugo Ekitike 6
Appeared to be on a different wavelength to his team-mates for most of the opening half. More involved after that and some nice touches. Subbed.
SUBS
Florian Wirtz (for Ekitike 76) 6
Employed as a false nine for the closing stages.
