England legend Shearer backs Welbeck recall on Match Of The Day

The [Albion](https://www.theargus.co.uk/sport/albion/?ref=au) striker is believed to be under consideration by Thomas Tuchel as he plans for the final two World Cup qualifiers.

His squad to face Serbia at Wembley and Albania in Tirana will be announced on Friday, two days before Albion play Crystal Palace.

England have already qualified for the finals so will be looking at their plans for the tournament itself.

Welbeck moved to six goals in the last five league games with a well-taken opener in the 3-0 win over Leeds.

His early finish was part of another impressive all-round contribution to the team display.

Shearer, who scored 30 goals in 63 appearances for England, was asked on BBC TV’s Match Of The Day whether Welbeck is potential back-up for Harry Kane.

He replied: “Oh absolutely, because of his form, because of his goals.

“He has only been into double figures once in his career and that was last season.

“There is no doubt about it that he seems to be getting better

“I was just about to say the manager has probably said to him, ‘You stay between the 18-yard box and you’ll get your goals’.

“But some of those clips about him working hard and the running that he is putting in, the tracking back he is doing.

“This is him getting back into his own box to try and defend.

“And when all of a sudden they win the ball, just have a look at him, the way he’s off.

“England are not exactly blessed with numbers in that centre-forward position so absolutely he deserves it if he does manage to get into the England squad.

“He helps set up the third goal with his work-rate, with his closing down and he is having a fabulous season, he really is. He is getting better.”

Welbeck, soon to turn 35, would not be a long-term selection.

But England boss Tuchel has only been contracted until the end of next summer’s world Cup.

Shearer added: “And of course is not bothered about the future.

“He is bothered about the six weeks at the World Cup.

“That is all he is interested in.”

Former Wales defender Ashey Williams also backed Welbeck.

He said: “I’ve played against him a few times.

“He was always tough to play against very powerful, strong, a good runner. But he just seems to be getting better with age.

“Regarding the England squad I think he’d be a brilliant person to have around the camp.

“Sometimes you don’t need a squad full of starters, you need good personalities in the squad that are happy to not start and come off the bench.”
