'It's impossible to cover everything': Iraola on process behind bench selection

With a fully fit squad, Iraola will be forced to leave a number of first team players out of the match day side, and he will have decisions to make for both the starting XI and the bench.

That will include at striker, with Evanilson the most recent to return from injury. He has been replaced in the side by Junior Kroupi, who has grasped his chance with both hands, scoring three in two starts.

Enes Unal featured on the bench for the first time since January last weekend, and came on at the end against Forest – but one of the three strikers will likely be left out on Sunday.

Asked about his decision making process for who he picks among his substitutions, Iraola said: “I think normally you try to choose your starting 11 and then choose players for if something happens to any of those players in the starting 11, you are prepared.

“But it's impossible because it's 20 players. You can’t have 22. So you have to choose players who can cover for two, three different positions between defensive, offensive players.

“Normally I try to prioritise offensive players on the bench because there is a bigger biggest percentage that you need them at the end of the games.

“Normally you don't change as many defenders. Sometimes you need them, but you cannot cover everything.

“So you have to try to guess, you don't know if you are winning the game second half, so probably you need more defensive changes or you are losing and then you have to throw everything on.

“So it's difficult. But you try to cover for every possible scenario of something happening or a red card or an injury. But it's impossible to cover everything.”
