Paddy Davitt's Canaries player ratings after horrid Hull defeat

**Vladan Kovacevic            5**

Still awaiting a home clean sheet celebration. Came racing out to try and halt Joe Gelhardt, who teased it past the on-rushing keeper. Then parried Darko Gyabi’s initial shot scrambling across his line before Gyabi slotted the rebound.

Vital sweeper work to race well outside area in the 44th minute to halt Kyle Joseph. Wayward clearance straight to Gelhardt in the 50th minute but Jeffrey Schlupp recovered his ground. Clawed out a low effort from Joseph.

 **Ruairi McConville                       5**

First league start under Manning and should have marked it with a first Norwich goal. Attacked a Kenny McLean corner in the 15th minute but appeared to be distracted enough by a back-pedalling Hull defender to glance wide from inside the six yard box. Late set for Jovon Makama to let fly from the edge of the area.

**Shane Duffy           5**

Composed in the first half, but like his team mates the work became frayed following the interval. Underhit back pass invited Joseph to advance but Vladan Kovacevic spared Duffy’s blushes as the Irishman lay flat on the deck.

Needed the Serbian to bail him out with an errant reverse ball inside the opening 10 minutes.

Unmarked seven yards but his bouncing header from McLean’s corner was tipped over by Ivor Pandur. Picked out Pelle Mattsson in a bright start, who fed Schlupp to produce a couple of step overs before his shot was deflected.

Snap tackle set Josh Sargent free and when his shot ricocheted into Oscar Schwartau’s path the Dane has to do much better. Not able to intercept Matt Crook’s centre for Gyabi to seal the win.

Flick on for McLean who advanced but saw his shot deflected.

**Harry Darling                              4**

Looks bereft of confidence and a long way short of those commanding early season displays.

Caught out again in a channel duel, like the previous weekend at Swansea. Gelhardt had too much gas. Although the defender’s body language in the immediate appeared to suggest he felt Kovacevic had not helped his cause. Did get across to close the door on the same player in the 57th minute.

Trigger move took him into midfield past two for Schlupp and Schwartau to combine in a rising shot against the top of the bar.

**Kellen Fisher                              6**

Back in the side and showed glimpses of his attacking threat. Linked with Josh Sargent for a penetrative burst that ended with Makama recycling the ball before a low cross the American skied over from point blank range.

Fisher snapped a low ball into Sargent’s feet in the 13th minute that ended with Schlupp winning a corner.

Fine block from Joel Ndala’s rising strike. Lovely whip on a free kick intended for McConville. Snaffled Shane Duffy’s header to strike goalwards.

**Pelle Mattsson                 6**

Small signs the Dane is adjusting his game to the pace and physicality required in this level of English football.

Showed for Duffy in the 16th minute and intelligently turned out to release Schlupp. Curled wide after Schlupp had attracted two marker.

Driving run in the 31st minute before a nice swivel and release for Schupp. Touch off for Makama from McLean’s initial pass triggered a flowing move that ended with a tame sidefooter from Schwartau.

**Kenny McLean                           7**

Singled out post-match in glowing terms by Hull boss Sergej Jakirovic, who hailed his passing ability to break lines.

But two set pieces could easily have brought assists, with the two Northern Irish defenders unable to hit the target.

A couple of channel balls tried to get Sargent into promising positions. Later thread for Schlupp who cut his centre behind Makama. Triggered the move that ended with Schwartau firing at Pandur. Allowed Matt Cooks’ cross to evade him for Gyabi’s winner.

Snapshot blocked in the 95th minute from Duffy’s flick.

**Jeffrey Schlupp                         6**

Best outing in green and yellow. Coat of paint from opening his goal account when he controlled Schwartau’s slip pass and veered around his marker.

Powerful burst and curling early delivery was clipped behind for a corner. Two stepovers but a deflected shot wide. Drifted inside two in the 35th minute before McLean tried to pick up Sargent’s run.

**Jovon Makama                 6**

Best moment came five minutes in when he used his strength and power to lever a Hull defender off the ball and then clip a low cross to the far post Sargent spurned.

Was on the move to take a touch off from Pelle Mattsson before Schwartau tamely fired at Pandur. McConville won his late duel to set up Makama for a right footed shot from the edge of the area.

**Oscar Schwartau                       6**

Two clear sighters but sidefooted the second at Pandur and miscued a first time effort.

Good first half link up with Schlupp, culminating in the experienced wing back slamming the bar. Keen to run on beyond Sargent as early as the 19th minute to drop a ball off to the striker. Then followed Sargent’s central burst to mis-direct a bobbling right-footed effort.

**Josh Sargent                    6**

By his standards a big early miss as he slid in to try and divert Makama’s whipped low cross. Showed for the likes of Fisher and was then on the half-turn to release Schlupp.

Burst into enemy territory in the 37th minute, following Duffy’s turnover win, but was crowded out and when his shot dropped kindly for Schwartau the young Dane miscued.

Perfect set for the teenager in the 66th minute but his bobbly effort dropped wide.

**Subs:**

**Mirko Topic** (for Mattsson, 71)               **5**

Rolled in Mathias Kvistgaarden who tested Pandur.
