The ex-Birmingham City midfielder has emerged on the radar of the Scottish Premiership champions
Birmingham City won 4-0 at home to Portsmouth on Saturday afternoon in the Championship. Paik Seung-ho, Tomoki Iwata, Christoph Klarer and Keshi Anderson got their goals against Pompey as they secured a useful three points. They have risen up to 11th place in the table and are four points off the play-offs.
Chris Davies’ side were promoted from League One earlier this year after winning the title. They went up from the third tier along with Wrexham and Charlton Athletic. The Midlands outfit are back in action on Tuesday night with a home clash against Millwall as they look to get some momentum going now after some inconsistent form.
Former Birmingham City man Lee Carsley snubs Celtic attention
Former Birmingham man Lee Carsley is sticking in his role with England U21s amid ‘interest’ from Celtic, according to journalist Alan Nixon. The 51-year-old, who was a Republic of Ireland international during his playing days, has emerged on the radar of the Glasgow giants. They are in the hunt for a replacement for Brendan Rodgers.
In this latest update, reporter Nixon has written on Patreon: “Lee Carsley is sticking with the FA and the England under-21 job despite Celtic’s interest. The former Republic of Ireland coach has been contacted about the post but is happy where he is. Carsley would only return to club football if the move appealed and is very much in the frame for the full England job when Thomas Tuchel moves on.”
Carsley, who is from Birmingham, joined the Blues as a midfielder back in 2008. He went on to make 53 appearances in all competitions and scored three goals. He also had spells at Derby County, Coventry City, Blackburn Rovers and Everton before hanging up his boots in 2011.
What now for ex-Birmingham City player Lee Carsley?
Celtic could see Carsley as the man they want to replace Rodgers with. However, it appears he is happy in his position with England. He had a spell in interim charge of the Three Lions’ senior team last year before Thomas Tuchel landed the full-time role.
He has also had coaching spells at Coventry, Brentford and Birmingham in the past. Carsley said in an interview last year that he didn’t formally apply for the England job before Tuchel took over: "No, I didn't formally apply for it. Because hopefully...I have been doing the U21s and I am really happy with my job. I am an employee of the FA and I was asked to take the senior team, which is a privilege. It was the proudest moment of my career.
"I am in a really fortunate position in that I am on the inside and I can see how much potential this team's got. It is one of the best jobs in world football. There aren't many jobs where you've got a chance of winning. I believe the coach that comes in has got a really good chance of winning and we deserve the best one that's out there."
