Leeds United set new all-time worst in Brighton defeat to ramp up the scrutiny on Daniel Farke - Opinion

Leeds United made a piece of unwanted history in their damaging 3-0 away defeat against Brighton to ramp up the scrutiny on head coach Daniel Farke.

Although Leeds competed with their opponents for long stretches of the game, Daniel Farke was powerless to change the direction of travel as Jayden Bogle endured an afternoon to forget in defence.

Georginio Rutter put the icing on the cake for Brighton as he created the Seagulls’ third goal, painting a stark contrast with Leeds’ toothless attack.

The defeat means Leeds have failed to score in successive away games, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin earning criticism from the club’s fanbase after the game.

By failing to score against Brighton, Leeds set an all-time worst run in the history of the club. However, more troubling is the way the game changed for the worse after Farke’s substitutions.

Leeds United set unwanted club record against Brighton

By failing to score against Brighton, Leeds have now failed to score on their last eight visits to the Amex Stadium.

According to LUFCData, this is the first time Leeds have played eight away games against a single opponent without scoring, for the first time in the club’s history.

Although Farke cannot take the blame for the trips to the south coast before his time at the club, Leeds’ game plan was mystifying in their most recent defeat, as he set up his side to play to Brighton’s strengths.

Brighton led the Premier League for turnovers in the final third coming into the game; however, Leeds persisted in attempting to play out from the back, which proved crucial in Rutter picking Bogle’s pocket for the third goal.

Farke’s second-half changes actively hindered Leeds, as he withdrew Sean Longstaff and Ao Tanaka on the hour mark, introducing Anton Stach and Dan James, and moving Brenden Aaronson into a more central role.

Rather than improving his side, Brighton scored their second just minutes later, ending Leeds’ hopes of mounting any form of a comeback.

According to the FotMob stats from the game, Leeds created an expected goals total of just 0.5, their lowest since generating an xG of 0.2 in the 5-0 defeat against Arsenal. Farke had to rethink his tactics on that occasion. The defeat against Brighton has to prompt a similar response.

Andy Gray played the last time Leeds United scored against Brighton

To highlight the full extent of Leeds’ run without a goal against Brighton, there was a Gray in the Leeds squad on that occasion.

According to Opta’s Jonny Cooper, Andy Gray, the father of Archie and Harry Gray, was an unused substitute as Leeds secured a 2-2 draw in November 2012, thanks to a late penalty save from Paddy Kenny.

Andy Gray and Sam Byram were in the squad the last time Leeds United scored a goal at the Amex against Brighton in November 2012.

Since then, Leeds have played eight games without scoring at the Amex & two of Gray's sons have gone on to play for Leeds alongside Byram. #lufc pic.twitter.com/EewJpLvmiA

Sam Byram lined up at right-back under Neil Warnock on that occasion, meaning the Leeds stalwart has been in the same squad as Gray and his two sons in his two spells at Leeds.

Who knows, the way Leeds have performed against Brighton in recent years, maybe Archie or Harry Gray’s son will eventually be the one to break their long barren run without a goal.
