‘Definitely not’ - Newcastle United legend makes feelings clear about Nick Woltemade

NUFC absolutely LOVE the Carabao Cup 😍

Nick Woltemade has quickly become the new cult hero at Newcastle United.

Alan Shearer believes Nick Woltemade is “brilliant” and more than just a No.9 at Newcastle United.

An unorthodox playing style has helped the German become an instant hit with the St James’ Park faithful. Despite being 6ft 6in, that has not stopped Woltemade from showcasing his technical ability.

The eye-catching highlight so far was his improvised backheel finish against Brighton. But on Wednesday, it was Woltemade’s aerial ability that bagged him a goal - and put the game out of sight for Tottenham Hotspur.

Alan Shearer on Nick Woltemade

Speaking to The Rest Is Football podcast, Toon icon Shearer admitted he does not know if Woltemade is a natural No.9 but has been impressed nonetheless by his start in black-and-white stripes. He said: “He’s done really well. He’s definitely not a No.9. A lot of his good (moments) in games is him coming towards the ball. Newcastle have to get runners beyond him, whether that’s the two wingers or the midfielders.

That will get the best out of him. And obviously, you have to put crosses into the box because he’s 6ft 6in - he needs balls into the box. Another good header (against Spurs). It was brave. The keeper made a bit of a hash of it but he gets his goal, he won’t be bothered. He’s a brilliant start to his career at Newcastle.”

‘Starting to happen’ - Alan Shearer

Shearer has also backed Newcastle to click following a patchy start to the campaign. He added: “It was a big result for them at the weekend, scoring in the last couple of minutes at home. They need to carry that on now at West Ham this weekend.

“It’s West Ham on Sunday then Athletic Bilbao on Wednesday, two big games, so they need to keep their league form going and start climbing the table. I think it’s coming together after a tough start and tough pre-season for obvious reasons.

“I asked Eddie that at the weekend, if he expected such a rocky start. But there are signs that it’s just starting to happen for Newcastle now.”

‘I am different’ - Nick Woltemade

“I think I play differently from the other strikers they have had here,” Woltemade said in midweek. The team after every game get to know me better. I just want the ball at my feet most of the time but I can help the team and if we all come into it I think we can get really good results.

“This team is so easy for me to come here, new country, a new language, I feel welcome here even from the first day everyone was talking to me. I think we all have a good connection which makes it easier for me and even for the other new players.”
