The Xabi Alonso magic: Real Madrid enjoy their best start to the season after 64 years

Real Madrid defender Trent Alexander-Arnold has opened up about what promises to be an emotional night when he returns to Anfield on Tuesday as Los Blancos face Liverpool in the UEFA Champions League.

The right-back, who spent his formative years at Liverpool before making the high-profile switch to Spain, admitted that he is experiencing a mixture of emotions ahead of his reunion with the club where it all began.

With the Champions League tie drawing near, many were unsure whether Alexander-Arnold would even be fit to feature against his former side after a hamstring injury.

However, the Englishman has recovered in time and is set to feature in what could be one of the most emotionally charged games of his career.

Speaking to Amazon Prime Sports, the 27-year-old revealed how he truly feels about returning to his boyhood club.

“I think when the draw was announced, everyone kind of knew it was going to happen,” he said.

“It was destined for that fixture to come, and obviously they’re a top team, so I knew at some stage, at some point, I’d end up going back there or playing against Liverpool here or there.

“It’s happening so soon, mixed emotions, and I think it will be a very difficult game, but it’s one I’m excited for.”

When asked why he expects the match to be so challenging, Alexander-Arnold highlighted the unique atmosphere and quality Liverpool possess.

“Of course, the reception and the atmosphere will contribute, but more so the football for me.

“I played there with the lads and under the coach.

“I understand how good they are, and although they have not had the results of late, they are still a top footballing team and nobody here thinks it’s going to be an easy game.”

He will not celebrate

Despite now wearing Real Madrid’s famous white, Alexander-Arnold remains respectful of his old club.

When asked whether he would celebrate if he scored against Liverpool, his response was heartfelt and immediate.

“Will I celebrate if I score vs Liverpool? If I were to score, I wouldn’t celebrate, to be honest. No,” he admitted.

The fixture marks a special moment for Alexander-Arnold, who will return to the stadium where he became one of Europe’s most dynamic full-backs.
