Is Brock Purdy playing today? Injury update, Mac Jones fantasy advice for Week 9

It feels like another lifetime ago that we saw San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy take the field.

Purdy last suited up in Week 4, but he hasn't played since after aggravating his toe injury. In all, Purdy has missed six games this season entering Week 9.

There was renewed hope this week that Purdy would finally return, but that was curbed by the fact that he only turned in three limited sessions before drawing a questionable tag for Sunday.

Here's what we know about his chances of suiting up.

Is Brock Purdy playing today?

No, Purdy will be not be playing for the Niners in Week 9 against the New York Giants and Mac Jones will once again get the start, head coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed on Friday.

However, Shanahan did acknowledge that Purdy could serve as Jones' backup or as the emergency third quarterback, which seems to signal he's not that far off from returning.

When is Brock Purdy coming back?

This is the million dollar question.

Purdy did show some progress this week despite his limited action, as Shanahan told the media he took starters reps for the first time since going on the shelf with his toe injury. Another sign of progress was Shanahan leaving the door open for Purdy to dress as either Jones' backup or to serve as the third quarterback.

But Shanahan also admitted that Purdy's toe is still "not fully healthy," so that leaves him as 50/50, at best, for Week 10.

Mac Jones start or sit advice

Over his first four starts of 2025, Jones was humming right along and averaged 313 passing yards, 1.5 touchdowns and less than one interception per game in that span.

However, he has started to come back down to earth in recent weeks, with Purdy totaling just 345 passing yards and two touchdowns to two picks in his last two contests, which leaves him ranked as QB15 overall in that span.

If there's a bright spot for Jones this week, it's that the Giants are ceding the fourth-most fantasy points per game to quarterbacks this season, so it's a positive matchup.

Even still, with only two fantasy-relevant quarterbacks on a bye this week (Jalen Hurts and Baker Mayfield), you can probably find better options out there.

Verdict: Sit
