Even the most optimistic projections for Sam Darnold didn't have him playing like this through the first half of the season. The Seattle Seahawks' quarterback is lighting the league on fire, combining efficiency with explosiveness in a way that few other passers can. He's led the Seahawks on an electric run, and he's just getting started.
Darnold's connection with star wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba has been magical. The pair look like they've played together for years despite only having seven games together. With his new quarterback, JSN has quickly risen into the top tier of NFL receivers.
But Seattle could still use another weapon for their quarterback to target. If they can add Ohio State wideout Carnell Tate in the upcoming draft, this offense could go from impressive to unstoppable.
Carnell Tate could be Sam Darnold's next Seahawks target
Smith-Njigba has been lining up on the outside more often this season than in years past, but he's still at his best in the slot. His lateral quickness, sharp route running, and feel for zone coverage allow him to dominate in the middle of the field.
While his consistent ability to get open is enough to keep Seattle's offense moving, the unit is still missing a classic "X" receiver to dominate on the outside. Rookie Tory Horton has shown promising signs, but his slender frame doesn't lend itself to the role that's missing in the Seahawks' offense.
That's where Tate comes in. The Ohio State receiver stands at 6'3" and is able to use his body to box out smaller defenders. He seems to catch everything that comes his way, using elite body control to make some highlight-worthy grabs.
Like many other Buckeyes' receivers who have come before him (Smith-Njigba included), he shows exceptional route-running skills and a knowledge of defensive coverages that's rare in college prospects. He's been impressive this season, posting nearly 600 yards and six touchdowns through seven games.
The young wideout has risen into first-round conversations this season after being overshadowed by other Ohio State receivers earlier in his collegiate career. If the Seahawks are going to get him, they'll likely have to spend their top pick to do it.
Still, given the explosiveness that he could bring to their offense, the selection would be more than worth it. With Tate and Smith-Njigba to throw to, Darnold could truly establish himself as one of the most dangerous passers in football.
