Newcastle United were handed a boost by VAR after a penalty decision for West Ham was immediately overturned.

The Magpies were facing the Hammers in the Premier League clash at the London Stadium, and took the lead with an early goal from Jacob Murphy.

Less than 10 minutes later, West Ham were awarded a penalty after Malick Thiaw was judged to have fouled Jarrod Bowen in the 18-yard box. After a lengthy check, referee Rob Jones was instructed to go to the pitchside monitor where the onfield decision was reversed and no penalty was awarded.

Jones explained immediately after the decision why the penalty was reversed, stating that Thiaw had made contact with the ball before tackling Bowen.

"After review, No.12 clearly touches the ball before making contact with West Ham No.20," Jones said to the London Stadium crowd. "Therefore, after review, no penalty and a drop-ball to start with the goalkeeper."

Newcastle went into the game against West Ham on the back of three consecutive win across all competitions. A victory over Tottenham Hotspur in the Carabao Cup followed wins against Fulham in the top flight and Benfica in the Champions League.

Eddie Howe opted not to name Kieran Trippier in the Newcastle team to face West Ham, with Emil Krafth select at right-back. United went on to confirm that Trippier did not travel to the London Stadium for the game due to illness.
