Commanders veteran suddenly becoming surprise name in trade deadline buzz

The Washington Commanders are in a tricky spot heading into the 2025 trade deadline. Adam Peters doesn't seem likely to make a bold trade to patch up what is quickly becoming a lost season, but there might be an option to dispose of expendable deadwood if the right offers come along.

Washington only has six picks in the 2026 NFL Draft as things stand. They don't have selections in the second or fourth rounds after trading for cornerback Marshon Lattimore and left tackle Laremy Tunsil. It was a risk worth taking at the time, but it leaves Peters short next spring.

The Commanders have to get younger in almost every area. Their roster is the NFL's oldest, and it's starting to show. Standing pat is the most realistic option, but one team insider believes there would be interest in one veteran player if Washington were receptive to offers.

Andrew Wylie reportedly has a trade market if Commanders make him available

According to Ben Standig, previously of The Athletic and now covering the team independently, league sources said there could be a market for versatile offensive lineman Andrew Wylie if the Commanders made him available. Whether that's something Peters would consider is anyone's guess, but the two-time Super Bowl winner has fallen down the pecking order.

Wylie started the season on the bench after the Commanders gave rookie Josh Conerly Jr. his starting right tackle position. He wasn't on the sidelines for long, with Washington turning to the veteran at right guard after Nick Allegretti's two-game slump.

This provided stability and assurance when it was desperately needed. Wylie became a nice stopgap, and he was far less exposed on the interior. But when Sam Cosmi returned from a torn ACL, his fate was inevitable.

The former Eastern Michigan standout is now a reserve again. Good offensive line depth is hard to find, so it would have to be a decent offer for Peters even to consider removing Wylie from the equation. At the same time, he's out of contract in 2026 and unlikely to sign a new deal. Getting something back in return now couldn't be dismissed entirely.

It wouldn't be much, but it would be something. Wylie is a solid professional, so any team needing offensive line reinforcements will likely ponder a move for him. Whether the compensation would be enough for Peters to cut ties in advance is another matter.

Fans shouldn't be expecting fireworks from the Commanders before this year's trade deadline. But you never know with Peters.
