Nuno Espírito Santo picked up his first as manager of West Ham as his side came from behind to beat Newcastle on Sunday afternoon.
Pressure had been mounting on the West Ham manager just six weeks into his time at the club, but he will hope this impressive win against a very good Newcastle side, who have aspirations to get back into the Champions League this season, is the start of their season changing for the better.
Given how the season has gone so far for West Ham, yet more poor fortune felt inevitable based on the game’s early events.
Just a few minutes in, Jarrod Bowen had the first shot of the match, weaving his way into the Newcastle box and unleashing an effort that cannoned back off the post with Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope well beaten, but only 26 seconds later, Jacob Murphy fired the visitors into the lead. It meant that since the start of last season West Ham have conceded more goals in the opening five minutes of Premier League games than any other team (seven).
At that point, with West Ham struggling so much this season and having gained only one point from a losing position all campaign (in the 1-1 draw at Everton in September), the atmosphere at West Ham’s cavernous London Stadium gave little indication of any confidence among the home supporters that their side would get anything from the game.
It followed that it would require something special for the hosts to get back into the match, and Lucas Paquetá provided it, firing in low and hard from distance, although Pope should arguably have done more to keep the shot out of the net. Five of Paquetá’s nine non-penalty Premier League goals for West Ham have been scored from outside the penalty area (55.6%).

Not long after, West Ham went in front through a complete freak goal, as Sven Botman did his best to intercept an Aaron Wan-Bissaka cross but succeeded only in turning into his own net. That goal meant that midway through the second day in November, there have already been more own goals this month (three) in Premier League games than there were in the whole of October (two).
It wasn’t quite as though West Ham fully deserved their lead. On the balance of play, 1-1 was probably a fair scoreline. But their lead was made more impressive by the fact that 22-year-old Freddie Potts was making his first Premier League start for the club. This came 24 years and 240 days since his father Steve made his final league Premier League start for the club in March 2001, and just under 13 years since his brother Dan made his sole top-flight start for West Ham in January 2013.
Potts very nearly got a debut goal midway through the second half, only to be denied by a painfully marginal offside call against Tomás Soucek, but nevertheless, he will have been delighted with his day’s work.
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe made a string of substitutions, including three at half-time, as he tried to turn the tide and get his team back into the game, but nothing he did worked. His team did not register a shot on target between the 39th and 90th minutes of this match, and when they finally did manage one, it was a tame header from William Osula which went straight at Alphonse Areola.
Newcastle struggled to get the ball into central areas all afternoon. In total, they attempted 27 crosses but just two of them found a teammate. No team has attempted as many crosses while completing two or fewer in a Premier League match this season.
Deep into stoppage time, Soucek followed up a saved Bowen effort to put the result beyond doubt and wrap up a first home West Ham win in the league since February.
