Trade rumor gives details for Eagles and Dolphins' talks involving Jaelan Phillips

One of the hottest names ahead of the trade deadline on Tuesday is Miami Dolphins edge rusher Jaelan Phillips, who is drawing interest from the Philadelphia Eagles.

According to Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer, the two teams are talking about a deal for the 26-year-old edge rusher, and both teams have specific demands.

Breer says that Philly wants Miami to pick up some of Phillips' remaining money, and the Dolphins want a Day 2 pick in return for the young edge rusher.

"Like we said the Dolphins and Eagles have discussed a Jaelen Phillips trade. One twist: Philly wanted Miami to pick up some of JP's money for the rest of the year. Dolphins want a Day 2 pick back. We'll see," Breer reported on Sunday.

Philly has a clear need along the edge thanks to the retirement of Za'Darius Smith, which left an already suspect Eagles pass-rush in dire straits. Brandon Graham's return does offer a replacement, but the Eagles still need more.

Phillips, who has three sacks this season, including two in his last three games, is an attractive option for a few reasons.

Not only did he show a ton of promise earlier in his career prior to two significant injuries in back-to-back years, he is still just 26 years old, so he could amount to a long-term solution if he plays well enough to earn himself an extension.

The problem is that Phillips is also slated to be a free agent in 2026, so giving up a Day 2 pick for a player who might only be a half-year rental is a risky play. That could be why the Eagles are looking for the Dolphins to eat some salary.

That said, the Eagles are all in in their quest to earn a second straight Super Bowl title, so don't be surprised if Howie Roseman throws caution to the wind and pays Miami's price without the team picking up a dime.

The Eagles are sitting comfortably with $11.5 million in cap space, so they don't necessarily need the Dolphins to pick up the rest of Phillips' money. And, if Philadelphia does take on all of it, that could lower the price.

While it remains to be seen if the two teams will ultimately get something done, we will have our answer soon enough with the deadline set to pass on Tuesday at 4 p.m. ET.
