Former Alabama head coach Mike Shula is out as offensive coordinator at South Carolina, according to multiple reports.
The move comes a day after the Gamecocks totaled just 197 yards of offense in a 30-14 loss to Ole Miss. South Carolina (3-6) currently ranks last in the 16-team SEC in scoring offense (19.7 points per game), total offense (294.1 yards per game), rushing offense (100.8 ypg) and 15th in passing offense (164.8 ypg).
The 60-year-old Shula was in his first season as South Carolina’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, after serving as an offensive analyst in 2024. He was elevated to OC by head coach Shane Beamer after Dowell Loggains left to become head coach at Appalachian State.
Shula was Alabama’s head coach from 2003-06, posting a 26-23 overall record before he was fired and replaced by Nick Saban. He also played quarterback for the Crimson Tide from 1983-86.
Outside of his stints at Alabama and South Carolina, Shula had spent his entire coaching career as a quarterbacks coach and/or offensive coordinator in the NFL. He was offensive coordinator with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Carolina Panthers and New York Giants, helping quarterback Cam Newton and the Panthers reach the Super Bowl at the end of the 2015 season.
It was not immediately clear who would handle offensive play-calling responsibilities for South Carolina going forward. The Gamecocks have an open date before traveling to Texas A&M on Nov. 15.
