Newcastle United lost 3-1 to Premier League strugglers West Ham United.

The Brazilian was the hero last weekend, scoring in the 90th minute to earn a 2-1 victory over Fulham at St James’ Park.

United then followed that up with a 2-0 win against Tottenham Hotspur in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday and headed to the London Stadium eyeing back-to-back Premier League wins for the first time since April.

West Ham started the day 19th in the table without a win at home since February and the Magpies threatened to pile on the misery when they took the lead in the fourth minute through Jacob Murphy.

But that was as good as it got from a Newcastle perspective. Lucas Paqueta’s strike and an own goal from Sven Botman saw Howe make three changes at half-time.

Emil Krafth, Anthony Gordon and Nick Woltemade were hooked and Fabian Schar, Jacob Murphy and Will Osula were introduced, but that did little change to Newcastle’s fortunes.

Harvey Barnes and Anthony Elanga were later introduced to make an impact but the Hammers went on to add a third goal in stoppage time through Tomas Soucek. Ten matches into the 2025-26 Premier League season and Howe’s side sit 13th in the table.

Bruno Guimaraes issues apology to Newcastle United supporters

Following the match, captain Guimaraes took to social media to apologise to supporters, around 3,000 of whom were in the away end at the London Stadium.

Guimaraes wrote: “Have to say sorry for our fans today. Not near enough to our best level. Your support is more than appreciated by us and we have to show it on the pitch, especially away from home.

“We have a big game on Wednesday and need the Geordies more than ever.”

Eddie Howe challenges Newcastle United players to respond

“I want to see a response and I want to see an honesty,” Howe said. “Because that's what we've built all our success on, is that quality really, an honesty in terms of what they've delivered in this game, and then an honesty to go and try and put it right if it's not to the level that they want it to be.

“We'll work together in that. It's really important that we don't overreact to one performance, but I think it's also very important that we're honest with each other.

“I'm always very honest with the players. I believe in honesty, whether that's positive or negative, so I was very honest and I always try to be fair. And now the key thing will be everyone's reaction.”
